Record numbers to compete in CIty of Derry Triathlon

The firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon is back bigger and better than ever before with spaces for up to 550 entrants at this year’s event, taking place on Sunday 19 June.

With a growing number of participants racing for a competitor slot each year, organisers are advising both beginners and experienced triathletes to sign up as soon as possible to secure their space.

This year’s event consists of a 750m swim in the River Foyle, a 20km closed road cycle and a 5km flat run, passing the Peace Bridge.

With relay race options, the race is suitable for participants of all abilities, as the elements can be split between a team of three.

The triathlon achieved prestigious National Series status last year and the upcoming event includes the addition of a qualified Super Series element, welcoming some of the best triathletes in Ireland to the challenge.

Chief organiser and race director of the triathlon, Paul McGilloway, said with the National Series status, the event will attract professional athletes with a competitive edge.

He added: “We look forward to seeing our returning novices looking for some fun.

“The event really is for everyone!”

Following last year’s success, the popular TRYathlon will also return, welcoming children and teenagers between the ages of eight and 15.

The event allows young people to get involved in the fun, during the run up to the City of Derry Triathlon.

The TRYathlon takes place on Sunday 12 June at Templemore Leisure Complex and includes running, cycling and swimming activities.

Foyle Search and Rescue is returning as the charity partner for the fourth year.

Registration for the firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon National Series, and the newly added Super
Series race, is now available through www.traithlonireland.com.
