Derry Chamber of Commerce has welcomed Derry City and Strabane District Council’s commitment to engage with stakeholders to protect the city and region from the “Brexit effect.”
The Chamber of Commerce is one of several local organisations that the council has agreed to work with to study the impact of the referendum decision.
The council’s chief executive John Kelpie has said that its agreement to produce an impact assessment study is important as a means of informing the council and the wider North West region in creating local mitigation and opportunities maximisation measures and to provide a robust evidence-based evaluation for lobbying, funding and other purposes.
Chamber of Commerce president Gavin Killeen (pictured) said it was important the whole region worked together to avoid economic damage from the Brexit decision.
He added: “In the short term, many local businesses have gained from the fall in value of sterling and the Chamber is keen to maximise the benefits of this and any other positive effects that might emerge from Brexit.
“We remain concerned about the Brexit decision, but we are very pleased to note the significant fall in the official level of unemployment in and around the city.
“We hope the Brexit decision does not damage this process of employment growth.”
