Some sewers in Derry’s city centre are ‘nearing collapse’, warn NI Water ahead of major repair project

Parts of the sewer system in Derry’s city centre are ‘nearing collapse’, it was revealed today.

The stark warning was issued by NI Water ahead of a major repair project in the area.

From next Monday, August 1, work will begin to repair the damaged sewers in and around the Diamond area of the city centre (pictured).

A NI Water spokesperson said it was anticipated that the work will take approximately five weeks to complete.

“Extensive investigation works which were carried out during June have identified that the sewer around the Diamond is in very poor condition, nearing collapse in some places,” the spokesperson said.

“Therefore it is necessary to re-lay this section of sewer as soon as possible.

“All of these works are being programmed to be completed prior to the commencement of Public Realm work within the Walls later this year.”

The spokesperson said that traffic management arrangements have been discussed with TransportNI during the repair work.

“Due to the location of these works and in order to minimise disruption to business, road users and the public, the majority of this work will be programmed during evening/night time hours.

“In order to carry out the work safely, it will be necessary to have a temporary road closure in place during the night time works, and a diversion route will be signposted during this time.

“Where the road closure is in place, this will be fully removed everyday between 7.00am and 7.00pm.

“Vehicular access will be maintained for residents where possible and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

“There will also be a section of work at the Diamond which will be carried out during day time hours, full vehicular access will be available around the Diamond during normal business hours during this section work.”
