The funerals of the two men killed in yesterday’s horrific road crash on the main Derry to Letterkenny Road will take place on Saturday.
Dermot Murphy-Boyle and Barney McGinley died instantly when their car was involved in a head-on collision on the inbound dual carriageway at around 4.45am.
Mr Murphy-Boyle’s remains were taken from the Eternal Light Chapel of Rest at Mountain Top at noon today to respose at his home on Cullion Road.
He will be laid to rest in New Leck cemetery following 12.00 Requiem Mass in the Church of the Irish Martyrs.
Mr McGinley’s remains will be taken from the same Chapel of Rest to his home in Glenwood at 4.00pm this afternoon.
He will be laid to rest in New Leck cemetery following 3.00pm Requiem Mass in St Eunan’s Cathedral.
The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) have confirmed they are investigating the incident following reports that Gardaí may have had some interaction with the car prior to the crash.
In a statement the Garda watchdog said: "It was referred to GSOC in line with normal procedure when it appears that the conduct of a Garda member may have resulted in death or serious harm.
"It appears that there had been some interaction between Gardaí and the vehicle in which the two young men were travelling prior to the collision.
"GSOC will examine the circumstances to establish the facts in this regard.
