SDLP welcome road network improvements for Ferguson Street and Maureen Avenue

What has been described as “road network improvements” are to be carried out at Ferguson Street and Maureen Avenue in the Abercorn Road/Bishop Street area of Derry.

The announcement has been welcomed by the SDLP leader on Derry City and Strabane District Council Martin Reilly.

Cllr Reilly said he was “delighted” at the news.

He said: “A constituent visited the office of Foyle MP Mark Durkan to highlight his concerns over a number of issues affecting traffic flow and management in the tightly knit terraced area of Ferguson Street and Maureen Avenue.

“The road markings in this area are worn – and there is a one way sign on Ferguson Street facing Maureen Avenue which needs repair as it no longer shows which direction the one way system operates.

“Furthermore, the constituent has had to assist the drivers of HGVs who enter these small streets without realising they are not suitable – i.e. it is really difficult for a HGV to turn onto Ferguson Street from Maureen Avenue.

“He also stressed that the signage at the Abercorn Road end of Maureen Avenue is on the wrong side of the road to alert drivers who all too often are following sat nav directions.

“Our office therefore made representations to Transport NI requesting that these concerns receive the attention they deserve.

“I am delighted that Transport NI have now responded – confirming that they agree improvement works are needed in the area.”

Cllr Reilly said the one way sign on Ferguson Street was to be replaced and additional signage had been ordered for the junction of Maureen Avenue (pictured) and Abercorn Road to advise road users that Maureen Avenue was not suitable for HGVs.

He added: “They have also confirmed that will be sending their maintenance team out to look at the road markings in the area and will be instructing them to be renewed if necessary."

Cllr Reilly concluded: “I commend Transport NI for their swift action – which will undoubtedly improve safety and convenience for residents and drivers in the area.”
