A 23-year-old man who shouted sectarian abuse at police during the annual Twelfth celebrations while children looked on has been handed a two month prison sentence.
Kyle Moore appeared at Derry Magistrates Court via videolink from Maghaberry prison.
The defendant faced a charge of disorderly behaviour and resisting police on July 12 this year.
A representative of the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) told the court that at 5.50pm on that date, the PSNI were alerted to man who was “extremely drunk and agitated” on Main Street in Limavady.
The court heard Moore became “more and more aggressive” and was asked to calm down and leave the area by police.
Officers on the scene then discovered Moore was subject to a no alcohol condition as part of his bail on another matter.
The court was told police then approached the defendant and told him he was in breach of his bail.
The court Moore then replied: “I hope you die in a car crash.”
The court was then told the defendant called police “Fenian b******s” when children were in the area.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said Moore had “no excuse.”
He told the court Moore had been “extremely drunk” at the time, and was in “bad form” when he”realised the consequences” of his actions.
The court was told Moore was in breach of a suspended sentence, with Mr Quigley adding that it had “largely expired’.”
District Judge Barney McElholm described the incident as “‘nasty behaviour,”’ particularly in light of the Orange Order’s recent “It’s About the Battle, Not the bottle’ campaign, aimed at discouraging overindulging in alcohol during the July 12 celebrations.
“Then people like Mr Moore come along spoiling it for everyone,” he added.
Moore, of Coolessan Walk, Limavady, was handed a two month sentence and ordered to pay an offenders’ levy of £25.
