A Derry girl who won a talent competition has donated part of her winnings to the fund set up for the victims of the Buncrana Pier tragedy.
Amy Meehan (13) was recently chosen as the winner of the Talent North West competition.
Hundreds of people entered the talent competition during which heats were held all over the North West.
Amy was among 12 finalists of the competition at the Millennium Forum.
As well a trophy, Amy also received a cheque for £2,016 which she was presented with this week by the Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness (pictured).
After picking up the cheque, Amy revealed she was donating part of the money to the family of those who died in the recent tragedy in Buncrana.
Sean McGrotty, his sons Mark (12) and Evan (8), the boys’ grandmother Ruth Daniels and her 15-year-old daughter Jodie-Lee died on March 20 when the jeep they were in slipped in to Lough Swilly.
The only survivor of the tragedy was Sean and Louise’s daughter, Rioghnach-Ann, who was rescued by Davitt Walsh, who swam out to the jeep from the pier in a bid to help its occupants.
In the wake of the tragedy, a number of appeals were set up to raise money for the victims’ family.
To date, two online appeals have raised more than £85,000 between them.
Oliver Green, producer of the Talent North West competition, praised Amy for her gesture to the Buncrana appeal.
“What a wonderful young lady and an example to all in making a sizeable donation to the Buncrana Tragedy Fund from her winnings,”
“Her parents should indeed be proud, not just of her singing and musical skills but her kindness and thoughtfulness.”
Meanwhile, a recording of the recent final of the Talent North West competition will be screened on TV tomorrow evening.
The final will be screened by Irish TV at 7.00pm. It can be viewed on Sky channel 191.
