Leaving the European Union will cause serious damage to the agri-food industry, Derry Sinn Fein Cllr Paul Fleming has said.
Cllr Fleming, the leader of the Sinn Fein grouping on Derry City and Strabane District Council, said key players from within the sector have expressed their concern about the impact that Brexit will have on the sector.
He added: “They have expressed concern about their workers, many of whom are from European countries and play a pivotal role in the success of the industry.
“They have also expressed concern over funding for the industry and the trading implications that may be put in place as a result of Brexit.
“Many businesses are struggling to survive and are looking for guidance.
“The Brexiteers never had a plan and have offered no long-term or short-term guidance to people within the industry.”
Cllr Fleming concluded: “We will continue to meet with people from within the agri-food regarding their concerns. And will continue to fight to have the decision of the people North to remain in the EU respected.”
