Sinn Fein welcome use of police helicopter in fight against car crime in Derry

Sinn Fein in Derry have welcomed the use by the PSNI of a police helicopter in the fight against car crime in the city.

Sinn Fein Cllr Tony Hassan also welcomed news that patrols by the local and a neighbourhood policing teams confiscated alcohol from underage drinkers at Culmore Point at the weekend.

Councillor Tony Hassan said “I welcome a number of policing operations at the weekend to curb underage drinking in the Culmore area and the use of the helicopter in efforts to target car rime in the city.

“There is no one single solution to the issue of underage drinking across all districts of our city but we need to come at the problem in a variety of ways.

“On this occasion it was the intervention of the local policing team and a neighbourhood policing team.

“It also means looking at how people purchase alcohol. Looking at how alcohol is sold and marketed; and it means supporting vital community based initiatives that provide education, advice, counselling and intervention.”

Cllr Hassan concluded: “The move by the PSNI against car crime is to be welcomed. It’s an issue Sinn Féin has been highlighting for some time and will remain high on our agenda in the times ahead.”
