The death has taken place of renowned Derry artist Sheila McClean.

Mrs McClean (nee McGuinness) passed away yesterday after a short illness. She was 82.

She was the wife of the well-known civil rights activist, the late Dr Raymond McClean, a former Mayor of Derry.

Originally from Moville in Co. Donegal, she was a member of the Royal Ulster Academy and best known for her landscape work.

Commenting on her most recent one woman exhibition, she said: "Painting for me is a necessary means of self-expression.

“My desire as a painter is to establish a relationship between intuitive imagery, and a spontaneous method of painting.

“I try to achieve this, through a combination of economic statements, which are personal rather than purely descriptive and keeping myself aware of the life and integrity of the paint itself."

Her funeral will leave her home, 32 Aberfoyle Crescent, tomorrow (Sunday) at 1.20pm for 2 o’clock Requiem Mass in St Brigid’s Church, Carnhill.

She will be laid to rest immediately afterwards in the City Cemetery.

She is survived by daughter Sheila and son Sean.
