A second, “more in-depth” inquiry is to be carried out into the Buncrana pier tragedy which claimed the lives of five members of a Derry family earlier this year.

The move to commission the fresh investigation has been announced by Donegal County Council..

The news is contained in a statement issued by the Council in which it states it has completed its initial internal investigation.

Five people tragically drowned in Lough Swilly when their family car slid from the pier on 20 March last.

Sean McGrotty (49), his two young sons Evan James (8) and Mark (12), his mother-in-law Ruth Daniels (57) and Ruth’s daughter Jodie Lee Daniels (15) died in the tragedy.

Donegal council officials announced in May past that they were examining the “facts surrounding this unfortunate tragedy.”

In the latest statement, a council spokesperson said: “The council have carried out an initial preliminary review with its own staff.

"We are currently preparing tender documents for a wider and more in-depth review of Buncrana and over 100 other piers and slipways around the county.”
