Police in Derry have held a meeting with local refugees and migrants aimed at “building stronger, safer and healthy” communities.

The meeting took place at the request of the North West Migrants Forum (NWMF).

Speaking after the event, which was attended by the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderan Hilary McClintock, a spokesperson for the group said it was “just the beginning of a partnership between our community and the police.”

The spokesperson said; “We strongly believe that achieving a better and united community requires individual learning, knowledge, confidence, skills, positive and collective action, participation and citizen involvement.

“Building on trust and better community relations is founded on the principle of shared wealth, a caring and creative community and a safe and healthy community.

“A big thank you to the Police Service for Northern Ireland and the new Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council for their positive approach in empowering ethnic minorities and refugees.

“ We had such an informative event where the Derry City and Strabane District Council Community Safety Parnership officers responded to our request to join refugees and migrants in an informal discussion that was mainly focused on building stronger, safer and healthy communities.”

The spokesperson concluded: “This was just the beginning of a partnership between our community and the police.”
