Football fans and players in Derry are being encouraged to take part in a competition which aims to give a red card to homophobia.

The Football v Homophobia tournament will take place at Bishop’s Field pitches in Creggan on Friday, August 26.

The tournament has been organised as part of the Foyle Pride festival in Derry in conjunction with the Old Library Trust in Creggan.

Anyone aged over 14 is welcome to take part in the football tournament.

Among the local clubs supporting it are Derry City’s men and ladies team and Institute (pictured above).

The tournament will be officially launched on Monday evening when organisers will carry a banner on to the Brandywell pitch before the Derry City and Cork game.

A spokesperson for the organisers encouraged local people to get involved.

“Football vs Homophobia is an international initiative opposing homophobia in football at all levels – from grassroots to professional clubs.

“We want football to take a clear stand against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia so that everyone can enjoy the beautiful game and so that football leads the way in removing discrimination and prejudice based on gender identity and sexual orientation.

“Both Derry City football Club’ men’s and women’s teams and Institute Football Club have backed this initiative, and people from all around the city are supporting this festival from political parties, to youth group and musicians such as Wake America and SOAK are supporting the tournament.

“Felix Healy will be presenting the trophies to the winning teams on the day.”

To register a team to play contact maeve@rainbow-project.org or phone 02871283030 for more information.

The tournament is open to all players over 14 years of age and all genders. Entry per player is £1.
