A young Derry woman has completed a tough swimming challenge to raise money for a trip of a lifetime.
Una Casey is one of 40 young people who have been chosen to take part in a trip to Asia later this year as part of the Live Life Lisa Orsi Foundation.
The foundation was set up earlier this year in memory of Lisa, who died in March last year after suffering severe altitude sickness while visiting a volcano in Indonesia.
The 22-year-old, from the Waterside area of Derry, had been working as a physiotherapist in Singapore when she died.
Lisa’s family want the foundation to promote travelling to young people and encourage them to enjoy a healthy lifestyle, particularly through gaelic games.
As part of this, the 40 young people recently chosen to take part in the project will travel to Asia later this year to take part in a GAA tournament.
They have been chosen from GAA clubs in the local area.
However, to be able to take part in the trip, they must raise a significant amount of money themselves.
To this end, 19-year-old Una, who is a member of the City of Derry Swimming Club and also plays for Steelstown GAA club’s ladies team swam from Magilligan in County Derry to Greencastle in County Donegal.
During the swim, the teenager had to cope with very strong currents in the Foyle but managed to complete the swim in only 37 minutes.
Una raised around £900 for her sterling efforts.
The Lisa Orsi Foundation will involve a trip with up to 40 young Gaels from ten GAA clubs in the North West: Ardmore, Na Magha, Pearses, Steelstown, Doire Colmcille, Slaughtmanus, Sean Dolan’s, Craigbane, Claudy and Faughanvale.
The clubs have nominated young players who they feel will best represent their club and the foundation and who will travel to the Asian Gaelic Games at which Lisa had been an enthusiastic participant.
It is hoped that when they return from their travels, the young people will have a positive influence on their peers.
