A rally has been held in Derry in support of a Palestinian prisoner currently on hunger strike.

Bilal Kayed has spent more than 70 days on hunger strike.

The local rally, which was held at the Bogside memorial to the 1981 republican hunger strike, was told that Kayed was arrested by Israeli authorities and was alleged imprisoned without charge.

Among those who spoke at the rally last night was Sinn Fein MEP Martina Anderson.

“I am conscious that tensions are exacerbated and continue to run high in the region as Bilal Kayed enters his 69th day on hunger strike,” she said.

“Kayed was imprisoned by the Israelis without charge or trial for his alleged affiliation with the left-wing Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

“The Israeli authorities must take immediate steps to release Bilal and to end its policy of imprisoning Palestinians without charge or trials under so called ‘administrative detention’, which is completely contrary to the principles of natural justice and international law.

“The international community, and the EU in particular have a responsibility to support the people of Palestine and challenge the Israelis to end these attacks.

"These attacks on the beleaguered people of Gaza must end immediately."

This week’s rally was organised by Sinn Féin Republican Youth.

The group’s spokesperson, Caolán McGinley said it was important that ‘we stand in solidarity with Bilal Kayed and the people of Gaza’.

“The cruelty being inflicted upon the Palestinian people needs to stop and should not be tolerated by the International community.

“The international community needs to show their support to the people of Palestine and stand against Israel's apartheid regime."
