The final touches are being put to a major outdoor drama to be staged in Derry next month as part of the city’s celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

“The Dawning of the Day,” a re-enactment of the events 100 years ago, will take place in the Guildhall Square on the evening of Thursday, 12 May, with a cast of over 100 performers.

The special performance promises to be the biggest 1916 event in the North West this year.

The cast have been in rehearsals for the last two months.

The live action in the Guildhall Square will also be broadcast on the large screen in the adjacent Waterloo Place.

It will also be streamed live around the world.

A spokesperson for the organisers said: “Don’t forget to tell your family and friends who are out of the city they can view it online.

“Diirector Gerry Doherty has delivered an excellent script and the acting will be enhanced with specially selected music and the cast will appear in period costume, the audience is also encouraged to attend the event in costume.”

“The show will be family friendly and will suit young and old.

“Admission is free and the show starts at 7.30pm on Thursday, 12th May.”
