Foyle Pride Festival in full swing as countdown begins to colourful parade

The annual Foyle Pride parade takes place in Derry this weekend.

Organisers are encouraging people to create art and banners for Saturday’s parade which will leave Waterside Station at 2.00pm to make its way to Guildhall Square.

Foyle Pride has been in full swing in the lead up to the pivotal annual parade in which thousands are expected to take part.

Maeve O’Neill from the Rainbow Project said this year’s Foyle Pride Festival has been ‘as vibrant, diverse and political as ever’

Various events have been taking place since Saturday last, such as the launch party, a talk byPeople Before profit MLA, Eamonn McCann, who has been an avid supporter of the festival since the beginning.

There was also an LGBT inspired Comic-Con .

Maeve said: “From comic-cons to discussions on being LGBT in countries of conflict, Foyle Pride Festival has celebrated the wonderful diversity of the LGBTQ+ community as well as challenging the inequalities which still exist for LGBTQ+ people in Northern Ireland and throughout the world.

“The highlight of the festival is always the Foyle Pride Parade.

“This year we expect the parade to be bigger, and as colourful as ever.”

A bus will be put on within the parade for anyone who would like to take part but feels they would be unable to walk the length of the route.

Organisers have encouraged anyone who would like a space on the bus to private message Foyle Pride Festival Facebook Page with their name and date of birth as these are essential for a seat on the bus.

A ahead of the parade the event titled We Won't Wait: The fight for marriage equality will take at 6.30pm the City Hotel.

Tomorrow a football vs homophobia match will take place at 2.00pm at Bishop’s Field in Creggan, followed by a ‘lip-sync for your drink’ event at 8.30pm in Sandino’s Back Bar.

Following Saturday’s parade, there will be a BBQ in Warehouse No1 Bistro and Cafe, Sandinos Bar & Café Soul - £5 entry for Cafe Soul.

Later that night JD Samson the leader of MEN and member of Le Tigre will provide music at the after-party from 8.00pm at The Glassworks, tickets - £8 presale / £10 on the door (available at Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin).

Further events will take place at the Playhouse and Café Soul on Sunday as the festival draws to a close.
