Line dancing fundraiser in aid of Alzheimer’s Society to be held in memory of Victor Wilson

A Derry woman has organised a charity dance in the city next week in memory of her father.

Sharon Appleby has organised the Line Dance to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Sharon’s late father, Victor Wilson, had the illness.

The dance will take in the Memorial Hall on Society Street on Friday, September 2.

Sharon said she hoped the fundraising dance would be a big success.

“I decided to organise this night for Alzheimer’s Society because it is a cause very close to my heart as our family has been affected by dementia during my dad’s illness,” she said.

“My husband lost his mum to the disease and most of her brothers & sisters were affected by dementia too.

“I also have an aunt who is currently in a nursing home living with dementia.

“This is my way of highlighting the effects of dementia, it effects so many families and I have always wanted to do something to help.

“My dad went to almost every Line dance event we hosted over the years and because Line dancing has been my passion for nearly 20 years it made perfect sense to organise an event like this to celebrate my dad’s life and all of those in our family who have fought this disease.

“It's great to be able to host an event such as this, and to think that I will be raising funds to help support people to live well with dementia and to fund research to one day find a cure is what motivates me.”

Alzheimer's Society community volunteer Tony Bradley welcomed Sharon’s decision to boost the charity.

“As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals like Sharon and her family to help us continue our vital work so that Alzheimer's Society can continue leading the fight against dementia.

“Raising money is important but even more so is the need to raise awareness about this disease and the Line Dancing event will do just that.”

Dancing on the night will begin at 9.00pm and admission is £6.

Among the performers will be Robbie McGowan, Derek Darby and DJ Frankie Dolan.
