A new Irish music and cultural centre will be opened in Derry this weekend.

Sunday will see Ireland’s newest Comhaltas branch CCÉ Baile na gCailleach, in association with Greater Shantallow Community Arts, play host to the 2016 Fleadh Cheoil Baile na gCailleach at their new community arts centre, Studio 2, at Skeoge Industrial Estate.

The new centre, which is affiliated with Comhaltas Ireland, aims to promote Irish music and culture.

Ollie Green, Artistic Director of Studio 2, Greater Shantallow Community Arts said: “We are very proud to be associated with Comhaltas and very excited to forge this new strategic alliance which will benefit the arts centre and serve the local community in developing and promoting the enjoyment of the Irish Traditional Arts locally.”

Brendan Molloy, chair of Ballyngalliagh and County Derry Board of CCÉ, said he was delighted tosee a new branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoirí Éireann.

“The extensive programme on offer is versatile and exciting and, will offer the full range of traditional Irish arts to those in Derry and its hinterland.

“We extend a warm welcome or “céad míle fáilte” to all Irish musicians, singers, dancers, linguists and artists, of all ages and abilities, who wish to join our branch Craobh Baile na gCalleaich.
“The newly-built arts centre at Studio 2 is a wonderful facility and we look forward to hosting you and all our classes, workshops and events within this magnificent space.

“We cordially invite members of the community to attend our Fleadh Cheoil Baile na gCailleach which promises to be an exciting and fun-filled family event on Sunday the 28thAugust 2016 from11am-6pm.”

Mr Molloy said there would be a range of music and Irish language courses on offer at the centre.

“Sessions are free and open to all. The Fleadh finale will be marked with a civic reception with keynote speakers and a music session with refreshments beginning at 6pm.

“We invite you to learn a Ceilí dance or two, with easy steps and lots of clapping, we are confident you’ll be swept away by our ‘Waves of Tori’ and be fit as fiddle by the end of it too.
