Police Ombudsman still to publish report a year after police taser man in Derry

The Police Ombudsman has still to publish a report on an incident in Derry last year in which a man was tasered by a PSNI officer.

The incident happened at the Methodist City Mission (pictured) in Crawford Square on August 10.

A man was said to have started a fire inside the building before locking himself in his room with a knife.

Police attended the scene at the time after staff at the hostel expressed concerns about the conduct of a man in his 30s.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and paramedics were also in attendance.

At the time, a spokesperson for the PSNI said that officers spoke to the man who appeared to be carrying a knife.

Residents of the hostel had to be evacuated.

The incident ended at around 3.00pm after police tasered the man, and he was subsequently arrested before being taken to Altnagelvin Hospital for treatment.

A spokesman for the Police Ombudsman said the report was not due to be published for “at least another month.”

He added the report had to be delivered to the Justice Minister and other senior figures before it could officially published.
