Transport NI and NI Water services have been praised for their prompt action in resolving a drainage problem in the Culmore area of Derry.

SDLP Cllr Angela Dobbins (pictured) said every year following heavy rain, residents at the bottom of Mount Vernon had to resort to using sandbags to evade the torrent of overspill from an inadequate draining system.

She added each year the level of water continued rising and any attempt to unblock the drains was “fruitless.”

She added: “This year I was called to the resident’s homes to witness raw sewage flowing into their properties.

“I raised this serious problem at the environmental meeting before recess asking that Transport NI and NI Water would join together to resolve this issue as a number of these residents were of ill health.

“I am relieved and extremely pleased that work has now begun to replace damaged pipes and to add more piping to divert the overspill from existing.”
