A special event has been organised to pay tribute to a group of volunteers who provide vital support for people receiving cancer treatment.

The Mayor of Derry, Hilary McClintock, has pledged her support to the work being done by local man Jason Hughes who runs a minibus and car service to Belfast for people attending hospital appointments and receiving treatment for cancer.

Speaking following a Mayoral reception for Jason and his team of volunteers and users of the service, that was held in the Guildhall earlier this week, the Mayor said she was overwhelmed by the work being done by Jason and his team to offer help and support to cancer patients across the North West.

“Jason and his team of volunteers offer an amazing free daily bus service for local cancer patients who have to attend hospital appointments or avail of cancer treatment in Belfast.

“They are a fantastic bunch of people who are doing a lot of really positive work and I was genuinely moved by their generosity and willingness to help people.

“Jason is currently the Mayor of Muff, in recognition of his fundraising efforts, and is well known across the region as a Garth Brooks Tribute Act and I was delighted to pledge my support for his Northern Irish Cancer Care service.

“He currently operates a charity shop at Spencer Road to assist with the funding of the service and thanks to the generosity of local people, is considering opening a second shop in the near future.

“I would encourage the entire community to do what they can to support Jason and his team at the Northern Irish Cancer Care and do what they can to support and fund this much needed service in our local community,” she added.
