Have you ever wanted to play the Guildhall organ?

More people may be given the chance to play the famous insturment following a discussion at last Tuesday’s Business and Culture Committee meeting of Derry and Strabane District Council.

Councillors were discussing the successful Guildhall Organ event which took place on June 26 2016 to officially relaunch the newly restored Guildhall Organ.

SDLP Councillor John Boyle praised staff at the Guildhall.

“Anytime I speak to the public they are very impressed when visiting the Guildhall, it’s very evident that staff care deeply and it’s important to recognise their efforts.

“With regards to the Guildhall Organ it would be great to see more people coming in and having the chance to play it.”

Sinn Fein Councillor Michael Cooper chimed in.

“If they can play it,” he said.

The Guildhall Organ is the second largest concert organ in Northern Ireland and is located

on the stage of the Main Hall in the Guildhall.

The original instrument was crafted and paid for by public donations of £2,000 in 1891, but was destroyed by fire in 1908.

It was reinstalled but was again damaged by the 1972 bombs before being rebuilt by Hill, Norman and Beard Ltd of London at a cost of £68,000 in 1978.
