A special prayer service will be held next week at a new memorial to Bishop Edward Daly.

The memorial was unveiled in the Bogside area of Derry earlier this month in honour of Bishop Daly who died this month.

Bishop Daly, who was Bishop of Derry from 1974 to 1993, was 81 when he died.

His death led to a huge outpouring of grief in the local area and many tributes were paid to the leading clergyman.

Members of Bishop Daly’s family travelled to Derry on September 10 for the unveiling of the memorial in his honour.

Now, a ‘service of healing’ has been organised at the memorial.

It will take place at 4pm next Tuesday, September 27.

The service will be led by the Bishop of Derry, Donal McKeown.

However, Vinny Coyle, one of the organisers of the service stressed that it is a cross-community service and said other local church leaders have been invited to take part.

“We particularly want to thank other churches who rang their bells to mark Bishop Daly’s funeral,” he said.

“This was a wonderful gesture and we want to maintain and develop that sense of partnership between the local churches.”

Mr Coyle said that representatives from the Foyle Hospice, where Bishop Daly had worked for many years, have also been invited to take part in the service.

The Colmcille Ladies Choir will provide the music at the event.

Mr Coyle stressed that everyone is welcome to come along to the service.

“We want this to be about healing and it will be a wonderful memorial to Bishop Daly.”
