Police in Derry say they have arrested two men and seized a substantial amount of suspected herbal cannabis and cash.
The suspects, aged 25 and 40, were detained last night after police stopped a car on Trench Road in the Waterside area of the city and a van on the Toombridge Bypass in Co Derry..
Detective Inspector Tom McClure, from the PSNI's Reactive and Organised Crime Branch, said a “substantial amount” of suspected herbal cannabis with an estimated street value of approximately £280,000 found in the car and approximately £10,400 in cash was discovered in the van.
He added: “We remain committed to making Northern Ireland a hostile environment for those individuals and groups who are involved in major drugs crime.
“We will continue to work to identify them, disrupt their activities, arrest them and place them before the courts. We will also seek to ensure that they do not derive any material benefit from their illegal activities.”
He added Anyone with information about drugs or any illegal activity could contact police on 101 or information could be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
The police operation has been welcomed by Derry Sinn Fein Councillor Christopher Jackson.
He said “I am pleased that these drugs have been seized.
“I would appeal to anyone with any information to bring it to the police so they can continue to protect our communities from the scourge of drugs.”
He concluded: “While this successful seizure is to be welcomed it is also important to care for those who are addicted to various drugs and support the various groups who are working hard to help people get their lives back on track.”
