Northern Ireland’s main victims’ group says there has been a ‘low’ response in Derry to its search for new panel members.

The Commission for Victims and Survivors recently launched its call for expression of interest for new panel members.

The Commission is seeking individuals who meet the eligibility criteria for the panel and who are interested in sharing their experience with other victims or survivors in order to help inform the Commissioner in the delivery of advice to government.

The panel will be appointed for the period June 2016 - September 2019, to run in line with the Commissioner’s term of office.

Expressions of interest are sought by this Wednesday, May 4, at 4pm.

However, a spokesperson for the Commission said they have a ‘low level’ of response from the Derry area, and urged anyone in playing a role in the organisation to get in touch.

The Commissioner for Victims and Survivors, Judith Thompson (pictured), also urged people to get involved.

“The role of the panel and the Victims Forum is a vitally important one and with the replenishment of the membership we are determined to make real progress to ensure the voice of Victims and Survivors is heard in dealing with the past.

“The Forum brings the consistent and invaluable lived experience of its members and its development is key as it provides advice to the Commission and serves as a place for open discussion and consultation with the members.

“Future planning for the Victims and Survivors of the Northern Ireland conflict is essential as the aim of the Forum is to help build a shared and better future.

“This means that an ongoing assessment of the needs of Victims and Survivors is crucial. Practically, funding arrangements and the provision of services which accompany these issues also need to be tackled and solutions found.

“We hope that this call will reach out to all those who meet the eligibility criteria and feel empowered to put themselves forward to join the panel and the forum.”
