A new five-year strategic plan for the greater Glen area has been launched by the Glen Development Initiative (GDI) to cover the period from 2016 to 2021.
It looks at a wide range of issues affecting the local community and how they can be addressed.
Many of the programmes run by the GDI currently run from the Glenview Community Centre at Cedar Street.
However, the new strategic plan says that the community centre is ‘tired’ and does not meet the growing development needs of the community.
The plan outlines that a new ‘Community Wellness Centre’ is due to open in the Glen area next year.
Gerry MacLochlainn, GDI manager, said the strategic plan would guide their work for the coming five years.
Mr MacLochlainn thanked the centre’s users, staff and board of directors for the work they had all put into the creation of this plan.
He added: “This is an impressive document but a strategy will remain just that – a strategy – unless it is accompanied by an action plan that provides the bench mark against which we will be held accountable to our community and of course to our funders.
“The commitments enshrined in this plan will ensure that we continue to deliver the services we have until now but that we identify and begin to service new needs that become apparent in the future.”
“A very important part of our work will be the leading role we play within the Outer West Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership where we collaborate with other voluntary organisations, businesses and statutory bodies within the area to tackle the physical, economic, social and community needs of our community.”
