Home is where the art is at Derry's Tower Museum

The Tower Museum in Derry is reaching out to the public to invite them to discover and discuss original works of local art as part of a series of specially arranged coffee mornings.

The ‘Your City, Your Art’ initiative will display exhibits from both the Museum and Ulster Museum collections, allowing the public to engage with curators and offer their opinions on the exhibits at the free admission events.

Anna Liesching, NMNI Art Engagement Officer, said the event offered the perfect opportunity for local people to learn more about the art that exists in their own area.

“These collections belong to the people but most people know little or nothing about them,” she said.

“This represents the perfect opportunity to take engage with the art and take ownership of it,”.

“We would encourage those who wouldn’t normally visit an art exhibition to come along and learn more about the subject.

“It’s a chance to have a tea or coffee and discover the art in a relaxed and non-judgemental environment.”

The coffee morning is part of the ‘Creative Community Collections’ project and will be the first of a monthly series where different art collections will be on display each month.

The first session will be held on Friday October 14th between 10am – 11.30am while a second has been pencilled in for Friday November 4th.
