Concerns have been expressed by residents living the Culmore area of Derry who have received notification of plans to build a new housing development close to their homes.

The letters were received by householders informing them of plans to build 20 new homes at lands due north of numbers 1 – 21 in Coneyville.

The letter, issued by the Derry and Strabane Planning Office at Orchard House, states that a planning application has been from the applicant, Brendan Loughran and Sons Ltd, and that the proposal is now under consideration.

The applicant is seeking to construct 20 new homes, which will be made of 14 two storey, four bedroom homes, four two storey, three bedroom homes and two four bedroom bungalows.

The proposal also includes provision for associated car parking, landscaping and site works.

The letter adds that once the letters have been issued, council will then advertise the planning application after which consultations will be issued.

It also states that if any of the residents who received the notification letter has ‘concerns’ regarding the development, ‘you may, in the first instance, find it helpful to discuss the proposal directly with the applicant.”

Residents have expressed concerns over the development in relation to its size.

“There seems to be some confusion here because when we first heard of the plans, it was for ten new properties, and that seems to have now increased to twenty,” one said.

“Now, it seems that this number has increased to twenty, and I just can’t see how that’s going to work, because there’s simply not enough infrastructure here to accommodate that.”

The application marks the latest proposal for new homes in the Culmore are after 20 new houses at Tullyardan Square in Culmore village were approved last year, with 260 luxury homes also currently under construction in the area.
