A young Derry footballer who was seriously injured in an attack last month has made a welcome return to his club.

Niall Grace, 23, who plays for Institute, suffered a serious head injury during an incident in Derry’s city centre in the early hours of September 11.

He was initially treated at Altnagelvin Hospital before being transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

He remained in intensive care for some time.

However, Niall made a steady recovery and his family and friends were delighted recently when he was discharged from hospital.

Another important stage in his recovery happened yesterday when he returned to Institute’s home ground at the Riverside Stadium in Drumahoe to watch his teammates take on Lurgan Celtic.

Niall (pictured above with Institute chairman Bill Anderson) brought his side some luck as they secured a vital 2-1 victory with a late goal.

A spokesperson for Institute said it was great to see Niall back at the club.

A 22-year-old man has been charged in connection with the incident during which the young footballer was injured.
