Final preparations are underway for a major pageant being staged in Guildhall Square next week as part of Derry’s 1916 Easter Rising centenary celebrations.

Over 100 performers take part in a live re-enactment.

‘The Dawning of the Day’ will bring the events of 1916 to life on Thursday, May 12, with organisers billing it as one of the largest 1916 themed events taking place in the North West.

The cast have been in rehearsals for the last two months with event director Gerry Doherty’s script,

The event will also be beamed live across the world as the action unfolds in Guildhall Square.

“The live action will be in the Guildhall Square and also on the large screen in Waterloo Place as it happens,” a spokesperson said.

“There will be a top quality sound system installed for the event, it is also going to be streamed live around the world so the Irish diaspora can view it live as it happens in the Guildhall Square.”

Those wishing to attend the event have also been encouraged to don period costume.

“The acting will be enhanced with specially selected music and the cast will appear in period costume, the audience is also encouraged to attend the event in costume, which we feel will add to a very special atmosphere,” the spokesperson added.

The show will be family friendly and will suit young and old.

Admission is free and starts at 7.30pm on Thursday, May 12.
