A commemorative plaque to the late popular and well-known Derry tour guide, Martin McCrossan, is set to be located where he regularly began his tours of the city.
Mr McCrossan (pictured) died in February last year after a short illness. He was aged 53.
A report to be brought before a meeting the Business and Culture Committee of Derry City and Strabane District Council this later afternoon will recommend the plaque – being erected in recognition of Mr McCrossan's services to tourism in the city - be located to the front of the Foyleside Shopping Centre, near to Carlisle Road, where he regularly set off on his tours of the city.
Mr McCrossan’s family have liaised with Council officials on both its location and design.
The plaque will take the form of a small plinth-type structure mounted on the existing circular street furniture feature at the entrance of the shopping centre.
The plinth will be similar in style to that erected at the top of Fahan Street for the late boxer, Spider Kelly.
However, it is anticipated that the proposed plinth will be smaller in diameter and height, given it will be installed on an existing structure.
The top of the plinth will feature a bronze inscription (in an angled position) with the wording agreed with the late Mr McCrossan's family.
It is estimated the cost of the memorial will not exceed £2,000 which will met from existing budgets, and therefore no additional cost implication to Council.
Members of the committee are expected to give their backing to the report.
