The new-look Pennyburn Recycling Centre will reopen to the public on 16 May after a temporary closure to facilitate major refurbishment works that have transformed into a new multi-functional Recycling Centre.
Now that the work is completed it has successfully increased its capacity by four fold and is now able to offer a wide range of enhanced recycling services.
Conor Canning, Head of Environment with Derry City and Strabane District Council, said the new recycling centre was a major investment by Council.
“The new recycling centre at Pennyburn is a fantastic new state of the art facility. It’s a key capital development project representing an investment of over £1.5m from Council including £250,000 from Rethink Waste.
“The new facility not only has enhanced and improved recycling services but is more accessible, safer and more user friendly and is key in our ongoing commitment to improve recycling across the Council area,” he said.
As part of the investment programme plans are afoot to close the existing recycling centre at Brandywell to allow for the development of a new play facility for the area.
A date for the closure has yet to be agreed but it is expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
The new play area is to be located within the site of the existing civic amenity site.
Works on the facility will commence later in the year following the completion of the removal of existing plant and machinery equipment over the summer.
Mayor, Cllr Elisha McCallion said the development of a new play area in the Brandywell was a "really good news story.
Stating it represented a significant investment by Council in play provision and services, she added: "It is a major boost to the local community who will benefit greatly from new play provision.
"The Council is committed to providing improved play provision in the city and district and to actively encouraging children and young people to get involved in play and an active healthy lifestyle.”
