The construction of a new retail store in Derry will be completed within months, it has been revealed.

When finished, the Bargain Stores – being built on the former Budget DIY store site at Pennburn – will create 100 jobs.

Work on the new store began in June and news that it will be finished by early next year has been welcomed by Sinn Fein Cllr Mickey Cooper.

He said: “I have been in contact with the developers of this site in regards to the expected completion date of the work there plus trying to resolve a number of problems being encountered by residents in Pennyburn Court and McCartney Park.

“I welcome the fact that the works have been carried out thus far with minimal disruption and also that the trees at rear of the site will be landscaped as part of the works which will benefit local residents.

“It’s also good news that work on the site is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017 which will give local people the opportunity to apply for 100 new jobs.”

The Budget DIY building had been empty since it closed in 2006 with the loss of 30 jobs.

Home Bargains stores sell a wide range of products, from health and beauty products to household goods, food and toys

The company has almost 400 stores throughout Britain and Northern Ireland.
