McGuinness meets Secretary of State and again tells him: 'release Tony Taylor immediately'

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness today met with British Secretary of State and again told him: “release Tony Taylor immediately.”

In his meeting with James Brokenshire, the Sinn Fein Foyle MLA said he told him the continued detention of the Derry man was “unacceptable” and made it clear that, in the absence of due process, he should be “released immediately."

The prominent republican was arrested in March of this year after his licence was revoked by Mr Brokenshire’s predecessor, Theresa Villiers.

The move was taken on the instructions of the independent Parole Commission, who said the 48-year-old, from the Foyle Springs area of the city, posed a risk to the public.

My Taylor (pictured) was sentenced to 18 years in prison in 1994 after he was seriously injured in a premature explosion in Derry.

The Provisional IRA prisoner was then released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.

In 2011, he was sentenced to three years behind bars for possession of a rifle.
