Wardens patrolling Derry’s two main public parks have been issued with body-cameras.
The cameras are similar to that used by PSNI officers and have been introduced in a bid to deter anti-social behaviour.
Derry News revealed today the move was taken at a meeting last week of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Environment and Regeneration Committee which was told the new measures were aimed at cracking down on anti-social behaviour at parks and open spaces owned by the council.
These include the extension of existing bye-laws forbidding the drinking of alcohol in public to include both Brooke Park (pictured), St Columb’s Park and other council owned areas.
New signage will also be erected in the parks which will include the contact details for Park Rangers so that the public have ‘direct access’ to them.
A report brought before the meeting classified the Park Rangers ‘as lone workers who are experienced in dealing with difficult people’.
