East Derry Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald said she is shocked and saddened at the death of a woman on a farm near Garvagh in Co Derry.

Breige McKeefry, aged in her 70s, was fatally injured on Wednesday by cattle while working on her family farm.

It is understood she was helping her husband move cattle on their yard when at least one of the animals attacked her.

The Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation into the incident.

Offering condolences to the McKeefry family, Ms Archibald said the tragedy was a “awful reminder” of the risks faced by our farming community in their daily routine.

“I am shocked and saddened at the death of a local woman on a farm in Garvagh last night.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the woman’s family and friends in the wake of her tragic death.

“This latest fatality on a local farm is an awful reminder of the risks faced by our farming community in their daily routine and the HSE has a responsibility to carry out a thorough investigation of this tragedy.”
