Sinn Féin Councillor Sandra Duffy has today called for immediate action throughout society and in government to root out pay discrimination against women

She was speaking on Equal Pay Day, the point in the year at which women on average work free as a result of a stubborn Gender Pay Gap.

Cllr Duffy said: “From today onwards, women on average will work the rest of the year without pay. This highlights the unacceptable wage inequality which afflicts women throughout our society.

“Only a few weeks ago the European Commission released figures highlighting a rise in the wage discrepancy between men and woman across many European economies. At its current rate, the gap will not disappear for a century.

“The Gender Pay Gap is a critical indicator of gender inequality which is still rife across our society,” she said.

“This is a frontline equality issue, and one of many financial barriers faced by women in the world of work.

“Much more must be done by people in all sections of our community to ensure the staggering pay inequality faced by women is eradicated.”
