Detectives are appealing for witnesses following a paramilitary style shooting on Madams Bank Road in Derry last night, Sunday 12 November.
Shortly after 8pm as the victim, a 44-year-old man, was walking along Madams Bank Road with a friend he was approached by a number of males who forced him into a tunnel and shot him once in the leg. His friend was not injured during the incident.
The males made off along Madams Bank Road in the direction of Carranbane Walk.
The man was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries. Whilst these injuries are not life threatening, this was a brutal and horrific attack. It is yet another example of how criminal groups seek to control communities through fear and violence.
Detective Sergeant Reid is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone with any information that can assist with the investigation to contact Detectives at Strand Road on 101, quoting reference 1298 12/11/17. Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
The Chair of the Derry and Strabane Policing and Community Safety Partnership, Alderman Drew Thompson, has condemned last night’s shooting.
Speaking following the incident Alderman Thompson stated: "This attack follows the recent shooting of a child in Gartan Square and must be condemned outright by all members of our community. The assault on this man cannot be justified in any way.
“The criminal gang that carried out the shooting have no concern for people living in the area and attacks like these have no place in our society. I would appeal to anyone with information on any of these shootings to contact the police or Crimestoppers immediately.”
