Nonna’s Wood Fired Pizzas on Spencer Road are putting a call out for the city's most daring and competitive eaters to try and defeat what they have declared is Ireland’s hottest pizza - but you'll have to sign a disclaimer first.
Prepared to perfection in Nonna’s own wood fired pizza oven, the 12 inch Ring of Fire Pizza, includes a base of ghost chilli (Bhut Jolokia chilli) sauce and is topped with red hot wing chicken, red onions and they bring the heat with added red chillies, jalapeños, Birdseye chillies, Scotch Bonnet chillies and Komodo dragon chillies Now if that isn’t hot enough it is finished with a generous drizzle of chilli oil.
The Komodo Dragon is reportedly one of the hottest chili peppers in the world, at around 1.4 million Scoville heat units.
With the Scotch Bonnet coming in at 400,000 and the Birdseye at 225,000 Scoville heat units.
Capsaicin is the active chemical that causes the heat in a chilli pepper, their heat is measured in ‘scoville units'.
If you think you are brave enough, Nonna’s have introduced Chilli Tuesdays and the Ring of Fire challenge:
Anyone who attempts to eat the Ring of Fire must sign a disclaimer and be of good health before undertaking the challenge.
They are required to eat the entire 12" pizza including all the chillies on the pizza and must finish the entire pizza within 20 minutes.
Darren, co-owner of Nonna’s, said of the challenge: “We’ve had a few people who’ve managed it and even more who failed, some even on their last slice! It’s a really tasty pizza but it’s only for those who love and can handle their spices, I wimped out after two slices but most people hit the chilli wall after five.
"I don’t know how they do it but it’s great craic with a few friends. We let customers bring their own beer or wine though a few have come well prepared with milk, chocolate milk and even Gaviscon.”
Nonna’s recommend if you burn your mouth with chilli, drink milk or yoghurt, or eat ice cream, even peanut butter instead.
WARNING - Drinking water will do no good because capsaicin is not soluble in water.
