The city's Christmas Tree has been erected in Guildhall Square ahead of Santa's arrival in the city centre next week.

Visitors to Guildhall Square today got a preview of tree prior to its decoration in time for the big arrival next Thursday, November 23 from 6-8pm

‘Santa’ will be making the long trip from the North Pole to visit the city – and Mayor of Derry and Strabane Council, Councillor Maolíosa McHugh, is encouraging everyone to join in the festive fun and experience the magic of Christmas at this year’s lighting ceremony.

Mayor McHugh said: “I am delighted that Santa is taking the time out of a very busy schedule to visit Derry and usher in the start of this year’s festive celebrations!
“The ‘Christmas Lights Switch On’ is a great family event which marks the start of a fantastic festive campaign that includes the Winterland Market, the Sound of Light Procession and the Wonder Windows Trail.

“An evening of musical fun awaits before Santa makes his big arrival – with live music by ‘Sensation’ in Guildhall Square and ‘Superstition’ in Waterloo Place.

“Indeed, I’m also really looking forward to hearing 9 year-old Cora Harkin from Strathfoyle singing at the switch on ceremony. Cora just loves singing and at such a young age she has already some notable achievements – including second place at this year’s Teenstars Ireland competition and a finalist at Opportunity Knocks 2017.

“Translink are also teaming up with arts provider ‘Young at Art’ ahead of Santa’s big arrival at the switch on ceremony – with a special festive workshop in the Foyle Street Bus Station from 3:30-6.30pm – where a few of his elves will help children create ‘Santa Stop Here’ signs and make special sparkly reindeer food in preparation for Christmas.

“Families can also enjoy a walkabout of the area – where they’ll see street characters and meet real reindeers in the Peace Garden!

“Indeed, the festive lighting ceremony is a great way for families to count down to Christmas.

“I’m expecting a huge turnout – and look forward to welcoming thousands of visitors to the city in the run up to Christmas.

“Santa has confirmed that he’ll be bringing some special guests and of course his famous festive cheer – so make sure that you’re there early and don’t miss out on what promises to be a truly magical occasion!”
