Around 30 families will have to be evacuated following the discovery of a pipe bomb in Derry tonight, Sinn Fein councilor Sandra Duffy has said.

There had been some confusion that the pipe bomb may have gone off, but it has been confirmed this was not the case.

Sinn Féin Councillor Sandra Duffy has said those responsible for exploding a pipe bomb at a house in the Carnhill estate tonight are at war with the people of Derry and will not succeed in dragging society back to the past.

Cllr Duffy said: "There is no rationale or justification for such actions in our city and the sooner those behind this incident and others in recent weeks realise that the better.

"Those responsible for this pipe bomb are at war with the local community and are attempting to drag us back to the past but they will not succeed.

"Whoever was behind this attack needs to realise that they do not have the support of the local community and they should stop these pointless actions immediately."

The Templemore Sports Complex is being opened to help those affected.

Cllr Duffy confirmed that Army Technical Officers are on their way to deal with the bomb.
