Dublin City councillors have received a proposal to name a street in the city after former SDLP Leader and Nobel Peace Prize Winner John Hume.

Mr Hume, now 8o is considered one of the main architects in achieving peace in Northern Ireland.

A documentary 'In the Name of Peace John Hume in America' chronicling Hume's attempts to gain support for the North's peace process in America has just been released.

He was also voted Ireland's Greatest Person in 2010.

A building at Maynooth University has previously been named after Hume.

Mr Robert Baker wrote to councillors with the proposal to change the name of Dublin's 'Hume Street' to 'John Hume Street'.

He currently owns and works at 12 Hume Street.

In his letter to councillors he said he thought it would be a fitting tribute to Mr Hume.

"It’s an idea that’s been on my mind for a while, but I suppose now with the publicity around the movie being released about John Hume, it’s kind of spurred me on to actually take the action,” said Mr Baker.

“It’s one of those unique circumstances where you lose nothing of the past and you can add something to it. I think the city has done more for lesser people; they could do that much, at least, for him.”

Mr Baker said he had great admiration for Mr Hume.

“One couldn’t but admire him all the way through the Troubles. I’m 55 and I remember that period very well. To me he stands out as a giant,” he said.

“It’s up to the councillors really to take a position on it and vote as representatives of the people. I think if they vote to change the street name, I can’t see why it won’t happen.”

Current Dublin City Council regulations state that proposals to commemorate living people cannot be considered.

Council policy says that people must be dead for 20 years before a commemoration will be considered.

However, Independent councillor Mannix Flynn has said he will support plans to name the street after Mr Hume.

He has said he will raise the matter at the next meeting of the Commemoration Naming Committee which takes place this Thursday.

“There are extraordinary circumstances and there are unique opportunities to do something and I would be confident that councillors would agree to making Hume Street to John Hume Street,” Mr Flynn said.
