A cyclist from County Derry who died following a road traffic collision was laid to rest on Wednesday

Shaun Mullan was seriously injured in a collision involving his bike and a Transit van on the Glenshane Road near Maghera on Thursday morning.

The 28 year-old, from Ballerin, died in hospital on Saturday.

The driver of the van was arrested on suspicion of causing death or grievous bodily injury by careless driving. He has later released on police bail, pending further police enquiries.

It is understood Mr Mullan, who got married just four months ago, had set up home in Maghera with his wife Sinead.

Shaun, who as known to his friends as ‘Elvis’, was an avid cyclist and a member of Ballerin GAC’s senior team.

As a mark of respect, the club has postponed all activities, including its presentation dinner which was scheduled to take place on Saturday.

Last night, a spokesperson for the north Derry club paid tribute to Mr Mullan, describing him as ‘a much loved member’ of the team.

The statement read: “The members, players and committee of Ballerin GAC are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our club mate and present senior player Shaun Mullan. Shaun was a very well loved member of our senior team who enjoyed training and playing football with his friends and teammates. Shaun loved a tough physical battle during a game and this side of his personality shone through to the end as he tried his best to battle the injuries he suffered in the tragic accident on Thursday morning.”

The statement continued: “Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with Shaun’s family and his wife Sinead. This will undoubtedly be a very difficult time for his family, friends and our wider club family, we will now do our best as a Club and Community to help each other through this tragic, sorrowful time and keep the memory of Shaun strong in our hearts.

“Finally we would like to extend our thanks to all those who have offered their condolences and support during this time.”

As news of Mr Mullan’s death filtered through, tributes began to pour in online.

Shaun’s former university lecturer wrote on Facebook: “I had the pleasure to have taught Shaun for 4 years whilst he studied for his Degree at Ulster University. He was a credit to his family and himself. Thoughts and prayers with Shaun's family, wife and community.”

Another tribute read: “Such a tragic loss. One of best lads you could ever meet. Great family. Pray for them all.”

Shaun is survived by his wife Sinead, father Bill, brother Michael and sisters Kelly, Sabrina, Bernie, Laura, Emma and Samantha.

HIs funeral will take place tomorrow (November 22) at 12noon in Church of St Mary, Ballerin with interment afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
