A Derry charity revealed yesterday that they had raised over £5,000 through a ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ event last weekend.

‘Paul’s Campaign’ was set up by Frank and Marion Coyle in memory of their son, who died from a cancerous sarcoma in August 2011.

Saturday’s event saw 12 couples, many of whom were friends and relations of Paul, transformed from total amateurs into impressive movers in just ten weeks.

The dancers were absolutely fabulous,” said Mr Coyle.

“They danced their socks off and it was amazing how far they came in such a short space of time.

“They should give themselves a pat on the back.

“Some of them are even talking about preparing for next year. We want to take this opportunity to send a heartfelt thanks to everyone that danced, attended, bought raffle tickets and supported our campaign.”

The competition was judged by Maeve McLaughlin, Kevin Deery, Rossetta McConomy-Bradley and Mickey Feeney who travelled all the way from Boston to make a surprise appearance.

Winners on the night were Colleen Doherty and Tommy McMullan, with Michelle McAdams and Jason McAdams taking the people’s choice crown.

The crowd were also treated to a line dancing display from members of Destined and Irish dancing from the MCBD Academy of Irish Dance.

As well as a fun night out the event raised awareness of sarcomas.

“The message behind Paul’s Campaign is if you have a lump, a bump, a cyst or a swelling getting it checked out,” added Mr Coyle

“This is something that affects young people and it’s not routinely tested for.”

Lump

Paul had been seeking treatment for a soft lump in his back for six months, which doctors misdiagnosed as sports injury.

By the time specialist discovered it was an incurable form of cancer he had just two months to live.

His dying wish was for his parents to set up an awareness campaign, so that no one else would have to go through what he did.
