A number of objections have been lodged against plans to install traffic calming measures at a ‘dangerous’ road in Derry, it’s been revealed.
Earlier this year, a public consultation exercise was held on plans for the Braehead Road traffic calming scheme.
The proposal was for traffic calming measures to be put in place from the Letterkenny Road junction to the end of the 30mph limit on the Braehead Road at Nixon’s Corner.
However, it’s now emerged that five objection letters have now been received against the plans.
The opposition to the traffic calming measures emerged at a special meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Environment and Regeneration committee, which was attended by representatives of the Department for Infrastructure’s Roads Western Division.
The meeting was given an update on the progress for a number of traffic calming schemes planned for the city, such as the Lonemoor Road, which will see traffic calming put in place from the Foyle Road to Stanley’s Walk.
It then emerged that the Braehead Road scheme has been held up due to the objections.
Speaking at the meeting, the SDLP’s Brian Tierney voiced his concerns at the opposition, given that it was a ‘dangerous’ stretch of road.
He added that a dog had been killed on the road a ‘number of days ago’, and that residents living in the area ‘really needed and want this scheme’.
The Derry News contacted the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) and asked what the nature of the objections were.
A spokesperson for the department responded that the ‘potential damage to vehicles’ due to the traffic calming formed part of the objections.
“The Department has received 5 written objections following the public consultation exercise for the Braehead Road Traffic Calming scheme,” the spokesperson said.
“These objections were in relation to health and safety, liability and potential damage to vehicles.
“We are currently in discussion with the objectors to establish if the concerns raised can be addressed.”
