A warning has been issued to the Derry public over an increase in burglaries in the lead up to Christmas.

Local councillor Darren O'Reilly has said that there has been an increase in the number of burglaries and attempted burglaries in the Rosemount and Hazelbank areas in the last week.

Cllr O'Reilly said that a number of homes and cars had been targeted.

He urged homeowners to make sure their homes are secure during the Christmas season with many homes having a large amount of cash to buy presents and presents themselves.

Cllr O'Reilly said that more people will be spending time outside their homes in the evening attending various festive events and Christmas parties and urged the community to stay vigilant against burglaries.
