An new programme from the Loughs Agency to help young people learn more about the natural heritage of the River Foyle has gotten underway.

Sixteen young people, aged between 14 and 17, have been recruited for the 10 week course which will see them learn more about the natural heritage and importance of the River Foyle, becoming Ambassadors for its future management and protection.

The participants are undertaking a range of classroom-based personal development activities such as confidence building, leadership skills, citizenship and teamwork.

Onsite activities at the river bank are also helping them to learn more about its biodiversity, species and habitats.

The young people will pick litter and improve habitats to help protect the natural heritage of the area and they will further explore the river by taking part in activities such as canoeing, boating, hiking and fishing.
