A weight loss group leader who helped countless Derry people to become healthier and happier passed away on Monday.

Ann Fox of Belfield Park ran Weight Watchers groups in the city for over 20 years and was also a well-known secretary at Derry City Football Club.

Edel Doherty who joined one of Ann’s classes six years ago said she inspired her to become a group leader herself.

“The difference she made to people was just amazing,” said Edel.

“She really changed their lives.

“She knew what we were going through because she had her own weight loss journey, so she knew exactly what she was talking about.

“I took over Ann’s group at the City Hotel when she was sick, and they were really big shoes to fill

“She was discreet and professional in everything she did.”

Edel said Ann was always generous with her time and happy to help others out.

“When we started doing ‘Power Point’ presentations at Weight Watchers I hadn’t a clue.

“Ann took the time to show me how to work it.

“She just took me under her wing. What I loved about Ann is that she was just so loving and kind.”

Family

Ann was devoted to her husband Michael, children Gearoid, Caoimhe and Mairead and grandchildren Aoife, Cora and Eabha,

“She just lived for her family,” said Edel.

“As soon as her groups were over she just wanted to go home and spend her time with them.

“She talked about her family all the time and she was so proud of them all.”

A spokesperson for Derry City Football Club said: “Ann served as secretary during the club’s early years in the League of Ireland and would have been well known to visitors to the club’s offices in Queen Street.

“The club would like to extend condolences to Ann’s circle of family and friends.”
