A woman who ran off without paying her taxi fare from Enniskillen to Derry was fined yesterday, at the city’s Magistrate’s Court.

Shannon Clifford, 22, of Celandine Court in the Waterside area of the city, admitted the offence from May 31 of this year.

The court was told that Clifford ordered a taxi from Enniskillen to Derry, but when it arrived and she was told it would cost £80, she ran off without paying. However, a Public Prosecutor said Clifford forgot a set of keys in the car and the taxi driver recognised her.

Defence solicitor Mark Reid said his client had been going through a 'difficult time' when the incident occurred.  He said the 22-year-old has now 'turned her life around' and was willing to reimburse the driver.

Deputy District Judge Michael Ranaghan said that it was an offence ‘without sophistication or planning' and ordered Clifford to pay the £80 fare, £50 in compensation to the driver and a £50 fine.
